We all know or have at least heard of the 10 Commandments----But what about our 10 Health Commandments?

As I read different articles about health, one thing that seems to surface all the time, is that in order for us to have a healthy life we must have a balanced life. In the world we live today we can hardly escape 'stress'. There are four types of stress which we are exposed to.

Mental-----Work schedules, school assignments, finances, taking on too much etc..

Physical----Gardening, hiking, moving heavy objects, exercising more than you are used to etc..

Emotional----Issues that arise in your relationships, taking care of a loved one who is sick, grieving the death of someone close etc...

Environmental-----The air we breathe, toxins in food and water supply, poor eating habits, excessive smoking or drinking too much coffee or sodas etc......

Over time the experts say, stress can lead to a number of serious health problems, such as

diabetes, heart disease, allergies, depression, osteoarthritis, back and joint pain and sleep deprivation just to mention a few.

At one point of my life or another I have experienced (and still do) some or all of these problems myself. That is why, I am always searching and trying to educate myself so I can enjoy a better life and hopefully live a long, healthy and productive life.....

So what have I learned so far? There is so much information out there with more and more research done everyday. However, there are certain things that seem to have survived the test of time, and 10 (ten) essentials that keep coming up. Are you ready? I call them the Second 10 Commandments:

Thou Shalt:

1. Exercise Thy Body

OK, we don't have to climb mountains like Moses did, but if we don't use it, as

they say, we loose it. So, enjoy activity. An active lifestyle enables every system

in our bodies to work better.

2. Exercise Thy Mind

Read, write, exchange ideas, learn something new every day. Share what you

learned with others. Again, if we don't use it , we will loose it.

3. Exercise Thy Spirit

Read inspirational and/or spiritual works. Give and allow others to give to

you. Allow for time alone and time with others. Develop a relationship with

God. Give and receive love and practice acceptance of others. It clears your

mind of needless anxiety, freeing you to enjoy life.

4. Exercise Thy Willpower

Examine your habits: the ones you want to develop and the ones you want to

change. Then set goals and make the changes.

5. Eat, Drink and Be Merry--sensibly of course

Eat nutritiously, choosing healthy whole foods. Drink water, for proper

hydration. Don't drink or eat anything in excess. Schedule time for play and

find ways to have fun throughout the day.

6. Have a happy heart

Laugh and help others find joy and purpose in their lives.

7. Give up Guilt, Regret and Depression

Let go of the past, and move on! Be forgiving, because as you let go of negative

feelings towards others, you will find greater peace and optimism. Positive

feelings boost the immune system. So, decide what's wrong (not who's wrong)

and take action.

8. Practice Gratitude

Gratitude brings instant joy and reduces stress.

9. Sleep Peacefully and Fear Not the Future

Establishing a bedtime routine will help you sleep longer and more soundly.

Don't worry too much about the future because it is not totally in your control.

Take care of today and most of the future will take care of itself. The best thing

about the future is that it comes one day at a time.

10. Live in the Present

Learn from the past, plan for the future, and live in the Now. Look for people

worthy of admiration and imitate their good qualities. Pursue and preserve

healthy relationships.

Well, I know we cannot do all of it all of the time, I struggle with it daily. I do my best. Somedays I do well and somedays no so good. Thank GOD that every day is a new day and we can start fresh. Just remember that taking even small steps in each one of the 10 commandments will improve our lives and wellness in wonderful ways.
